DIY Cleaning Powder

DIY Cleaning Powder

So you know those store-bought powder cleansers that come in a shaker can and are meant to leave your toilets sparkly clean? Did you know that the leading brands have scores of "D" or "F" from the Environmental Working Group (EWG)? Not to mention that they come in nonrecyclable packaging... In other words, they're not good for you, not good for your home, and not good for the planet. But powder cleansers have an important job to do: their abrasiveness makes them a perfect match for stubborn build-up that we often find in our bathrooms and kitchens. The solution? You guessed it -- DIY! This recipe contains three ingredients (four if you use essential oils), and all of them are items you likely already have in your home. And the main ingredient, baking soda, has an EWG "A" rating. Woohoo!

Ingredients

  • 4 parts baking soda
  • 1 part salt
  • 1 part ground bar soap (see step 1)
  • Essential oils (optional)

Directions

  1. Grate the soap with a cheese grater, then grind in a food processor or coffee grinder
  2. Combine all ingredients and stir
  3. Voila!

This recipe works great for sinks, showers, tubs, and toilets. And all of these ingredients (with the exception of essential oils) are relatively easy to find package free. Win!

The powder shaker and essential oils used in this video can be found in our shop!
